4ALL LIVE supports three different production paths for broadcast captions: visible graphics through Ross XPression, visible browser-source overlays for OBS-style production, and embedded CEA-608/708 caption data through 4ALL Encoder. These outputs are not interchangeable. Producers should choose the required audience experience, then verify the selected path on the final downstream graphic, program monitor, player, or decoder.

What it is

A production workflow, not a one-size-fits-all promise.

A broadcast workflow starts by defining whether captions should be burned into the picture, rendered as a graphic layer, or carried as data a viewer can enable. XPression Bridge, the closed-captions browser source, and 4ALL Encoder solve different parts of that problem. Network transport alone does not guarantee that caption data survives every transcode or distribution platform.

What is the difference between open and closed broadcast captions?

Open captions are rendered into the visible program image or graphic layer. Closed captions are carried as data that a compatible downstream system or viewer can expose. The production paths and verification steps differ.

Does an OBS browser source create CEA-608/708 captions?

No. A browser source renders visible web content inside the composed picture. Use a documented encoder and downstream chain when embedded CEA-608/708 data is required.

Can 4ALL feed Ross XPression?

Yes. 4ALL XPression Bridge connects a selected cloud event and language to Ross XPression through the documented local Bridge and DataLinq workflow.

Which transports can 4ALL Encoder use?

The documented Encoder outputs include RTMP, RTMPS, SRT, and RIST. Transport selection is separate from caption insertion and must match the receiver configuration.

How do I know embedded captions survived?

Decode or inspect the downstream output with equipment or software that can expose the caption service. Operator previews and a successful network connection do not prove end-to-end caption preservation.
